“I Hate Valentine’s Day” Scrimmage Photos, Call for Ads, Roller Skating Night, and Season Preview

Visit our album of photos on our Facebook page to relive all the magic that was our “I Hate Valentine’s Day” Scrimmage! Shout out to all the volunteers and officials for making the trip to Antrim for one of the best, liveliest, most enjoyable scrimmages yet. Kudos to the 45+ skaters who played, for a great start to the season – especially you first-time skaters! Thanks to the Mad Misfits for putting on a great refreshment and merchandise table, and to participants in the post-scrimmage clothing swap, which generated a carload donation of clothing – 228 women’s, men’s, and children’s items – for the Revival Shop. And Special thanks to Mike Austin for being our official photographer for the day.

For more great scrimmage action, check out our Events page. Scrimmages are free and open to the public. Cheer on the Mad Knockers as we test ourselves against leagues across New England and get ready for bout season. Scrimmages are informal (non-sanctioned) competitive play with all the rules, strategies, and excitement of a real roller derby game but without the impact on team rankings. Community members, prospective skaters, sponsors, and visitors welcome!

Scrimmage Dates:

  • March 5 Mad Knockers vs. Worcester Roller Derby
  • April 1 Mad Knockers vs. Bay State Brawlers
  • April 29 Mad Knockers vs. Seacoast Roller Derby
  • May 13 Mad Knockers AND Mad Misfits vs. Southshire Roller Derby
  • August 26 (tentative) Mad Knockers black & white vs. Mass Maelstrom

Scrimmages are also great opportunities to learn the ropes of being a skating or non-skating official (NSO). NSOs can track scores and penalties, time jams and periods, and fill other critical volunteer roles. If your youngster needs community service hours for school, we are a registered nonprofit, and this is a great community activity! All scrimmages are 2 PM at Great Brook School in Antrim. Email us at contact@monadnockrollerderby.com to get started.

Our next community Roller Skating Night is March 11. Last month there was a big party of friends, and we want to see more of you out there. So bring YOUR friends, or make some friends at roller skating night! Besides hot and cold refreshments, we also have fresh new batches of league logo t-shirts, totes, patches, stickers, and our newest product: handcrafted, all-natural, luscious Mad Pit Paste!

Skater shout-out! Crash Cart #911 is a force to be reckoned with this season. (Duh, she’s a mom!) Having bouted with the Mad Knockers for the first time last year, she is back in black & blue, and steadily becoming one of the hardest hitters and steadfast leaders on the track. May we say, she also takes a mean selfie! Catch her in action and try not to fall!

Rolling out our 2017 season!

Monadnock Roller Derby is ramping up its 2017 season with exciting developments and opportunities for skating and non-skating community members to get involved.

The league is joined this year by Sarah “Sprawkett” Wright. For those who are not yet familiar, Sprawkett is newly returned to the Monadnock Region after playing with the Texas Roller Girls, who are HUGE in the world of roller derby! She is one of Monadnock Roller Derby’s original members, and in addition to her skills on the track, she has experience as an educator, is a fantastic organizer and task-master, and has a lot of enthusiasm for the sport and our community, all of which she is bringing back home.

Sprawkett is offering her training talents to the community with non-skating fitness sessions on Saturdays, 10:00-12:00 at the Hancock Elementary School, now through April 29. The intention is to welcoming space for average people to practice an cross-training and self-care regimen, alongside roller derby players in their community, to improve core-strength, flexibility, and balance. This “boot camp” style sessions consist of two 45-minute sessions with health/fitness discussion breaks. The classes are free for Monadnock Roller Derby league members; a $5 donation is suggested for interested community members. Participants should bring a yoga mat or blanket, athletic shoes, water bottle, and (optional) free weight for more resistance if desired. To RSVP, call Sprawkett at 603-748-9945 or email sprawkett@gmail.com.

Monadnock’s junior roller derby team, the Mad Misfits, is very quickly gaining in terms of performance and teamwork. After holding their ground against NH Roller Derby’s Sabotage Sisters last season, the Misfits are ready to take on three junior teams this year. They are a great bunch of kids who work hard and have fun! Monadnock’s women’s team, the Mad Knockers, is also on track to compete with several tough teams from throughout New England, with new and returning skaters.

Monadnock Roller Derby is a nonprofit league dedicated to the sport and spirit of roller derby. Its mission is threefold: Challenge ourselves to get back up, as many times as it takes; challenge one another to be our best, because no one survives alone; and create a safe and supportive space for all members to learn, grow, and destroy fear.

RECAPPING summer 2016 and ROLLING on to great fun fall events:

We were triumphant in our rematch against the honorable Battle Cats of Southshire Roller Derby in our second bout with them on August 20. Our junior teams also had a terrific expo. We are so proud of them! Many thanks to all our fans!
We loved meeting new fans and celebrating community at the Francestown Labor Day festival and parade on September 3. Thanks to everyone for coming out! Click HERE for some of the photos!
And the fun kept coming… We had a fantastic Home & Harvest weekend in Antrim, loving the friendly faces in the crowd at the parade as well as the fantastic skaters from teams across New England who came to play at our Black & White Scrimmage on September 17. If you have photos from either of these events, we’d love you to share them! Email: contact@monadnockrollerderby.com.
We’re back to offering monthly community roller skating nights at Antrim Town Gym! Our September skating night was great fun. The next one is coming up quick on Saturday, October 8 and it’s a Halloween theme! Click HERE to RSVP and invite your friends. There’s always hot concessions, beverages, snacks, cool merchandise, and a 50/50 raffle to benefit Avenue A!
Speaking of which… Did you see the article in the Ledger-Transcript about the free roller skating classes we offered in September? Cow Plow (a.k.a. Jocelynn) along with Jacqueline from Avenue A, organized a series of three classes that got eight new kids skating like pros! Super impressive!
For our women’s team (Mad Knockers), our second (can you believe it?) Fresh Meat Recruitment Night of the 2015-2016 season was held on September 12. If you missed it, you’re NOT too late to sign up! Just come to a practice, and if you need gear to borrow until you can purchase your own, just email us ahead of time (contact@monadnockrollerderby.com). More info HERE.

New Skater Night for juniors (Mad Misfits) is October 24!

Click HERE for details, to RSVP and invite your friends! Open to boys and girls ages 8-17, no experience necessary. Share with a young person you know… We would love to see them there!

Finally, some bittersweet news…

This fall, we bid a very fond see-you-later to two of the greatest women in Monadnock Roller Derby’s history…
Our sincerest congratulations and good luck to Hellenator (#40ish) , who is retiring from the sport (but not our hearts!) and to Dora the Destroyer (#98MPH), who is off to her freshman year at the University of New Hampshire. This mother and daughter have been with MRD from the beginning, playing with Fife (Hellenator’s daughter, Dora’s sister) this season in one of the most fearsome family packs ever to hit the track. Come around as often as you can, girls, we will miss you like MAD!

The Mad Knockers say “THANKS!” to all our fans!

We had a great home bout on July 23, beating the Battle Cats of Soutshire Roller Derby, 278-121.

First, we had a blast. We all played hard on a hot and humid evening, and even the power getting knocked out by the weather during halftime couldn’t stop the fun. Winning was awesome, of course, but the sisterhood that our team lives every day is really why we keep coming back to derby.

Second, we raised money through our wheel toss for Avenue A, to support the great work they do with teenagers in Antrim.

Finally, we loved the support of our fans – not just the ticket sales, but the enthusiastic cheering! From a raise of hands, the majority of our fans had never been to a derby bout before. We were proud to introduce our sport to so many new faces in our community.

Here are two great fantastic sets from the bout – this one captured by Rachael Austin of 71 West Photography and this one by Paul Erhardt – plus, an absolutely terrific video of our bout produced by Dave Kirkpatrick of Iron Horse Audio and Video Productions. We couldn’t be more grateful for their talent and generosity.

Our season’s not done yet! Come join us at these upcoming events:

August 20, 4 PM: Mad Knockers vs Battle Cats Rematch! Fantastic beer garden sponsored by Ramuntos, and after-party with a taco/burrito bar by Riley Rink. Family friendly activities included: poster making table, free photo booth and face painting. Kids 12 and under are free.

September 10, 6-9 PM: Roller skating night at the Antrim Town Gym. Admission is $8 including skates, and we’ll have refreshments and MRD merchandise for sale. It’s a great place to pick up a sticker for your car, or do some early holiday shopping for a fan you might know.

September 12, 6:30-8:30 PM: Fresh Meat Night at Great Brook School in Antrim. We’ll teach you the basics of the game, let you borrow some gear, meet the team, and have some fun together.

September 17: Antrim Home and Harvest Festival. See us skate in the parade! Stay tuned for details about a possible scrimmage/skating session!

Did you know that we have a juniors team? The Mad Misfits are girls and boys ages 8-17. They practice on Monday and Wednesday evenings, and have a wide range of experience. New skaters encouraged and welcomed!. Email us at contact@monadnockrollerderby.com for more information.
